The Third United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development, organized every twenty years, will be held in Quito, Ecuador, on 17–20 October 2016. The Habitat III conference is one of the biggest UN efforts this year. Almost 40,000 people from 150 countries have registered for the event, including 120 ministers and 20 heads-of-state.
The conference culminates with the session to be held on 20 October, where the New Urban Agenda (NUA) will be adopted for the next twenty years. The New Urban Agenda focuses on steering urban development on the right ecological, social and economic track.
The Habitat III conference means sharing of global data and development of new initiatives. The slogan of the event is “In Habitat we decide the future of cities together”. Topical urban development themes in the global context include inclusion and equality, resilience, safety and sustainability. The earlier Habitat conferences were held in Istanbul in 1996 and in Vancouver in 1976.
