Upgrade of Highway 5 between Tuppurala and Nuutilanmäki
Highway 5 is a part of Finland's main road network and it is subject to strict quality and safety objectives. The preliminary design to upgrade the section between Tuppurala and Nuutilanmäki to a four-lane highway with multi-level junctions was drafted in December 2008. Virtual models were utilised to present and demonstrate the solutions.
The preliminary design is based on the environmental assessment carried out by Sito in 2006. While the plan was being drafted, open and extensive dialogue continued with residents, landowners and interest groups in open floor debates and resident workshops. Virtual models were utilised in meetings and solutions were presented right from the plan drafting stage. The models became more detailed during the project and received positive feedback from all parties. The virtual model was also utilised in municipal land use planning. For Mikkeli's Visulahti, the partial disposition plan was incorporated in the model.
The project has its own homepage at www.tiehallinto.fi/vt5mikkeli-juva , which provides further details and video animations about the project.
