Oikarainen bridge unites village
The inauguration of the Oikarainen bridge spanning the Kemi river, and the connecting roads was held on Wednesday 14 September 2011 in Rovaniemi, Lapland.
The Oikarainen bridge crosses the Kemi river about 20 km east of the centre of Rovaniemi. The bridge connects the two parts of Oikarainen village situated on both banks of the river. Previously the trip over the Kemi river was made by ferry boat in the summer and by ice road during winter.
The bridge is a five-span prestressed concrete girder bridge, the total length of which amounts to 281 metres.
General planning and construction planning of the bridge was carried out by Sito in 2009. The contractor that won the competitive bidding made some changes to the deck structure, nevertheless preserving the architectural image of the bridge. Engineer Matti Tuuliainen from Sito's Rovaniemi regional office was project manager and responsible for planning road engineering, while the main planner for the bridge was M.Sc. (Techn.) Niklas Gordin from Sito's Espoo office.
Total costs for the project amounted to approximately € 6,5 mil. The Client was the Lapland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment and Destia the contractor.
