History

Sito got its start amidst the turmoil of the 1976 oil crisis.

Faith in our own abilities

For many design agencies, the oil crisis meant that belts had to be tightened. For the Finnish branch of a sizeable Swedish company ,it resulted in bankruptcy. Eight young engineers who had worked for the agency decided to build a new company from the ashes. Suomalainen Insinööritoimisto Oy, or SITO, was born. In thirty-odd years, the company has grown from employing a couple of dozen people to a corporation with staff of over 330 hundred individuals.

Computers to aid in planning and design

Right off the bat, the company made a significant investment in the development of a proprietary computer design system. Effective in-house planning applications allowed Sito to implement large-scale projects faster and more efficiently. In 1984, Sito Systems Oy, later Citycad Finland, was founded to handle software development and marketing.

Over the years, we've grown and gained vital expertise through acquisitions

In 2002,Sito bought Centroid Oy to strengthen its software know-how. Citycad Finland Oy and Centroid Oy were merged in 2005 and are now known as Sito Tietotekniikka Oy. Sito Tietotekniikka is responsible for the corporation's software business.
The merging of Esisuunnittelijat and YS-Konsultit with Sito in 2004 and 2006 respectively brought significant reinforcements in our core competence areas of artery, structure and bridge design, as well as geotechnics. Urban planning and urban engineering benefited similarly.
 

New subsidiaries bring additional strength and local knowledge

Founded in 2000, Sito Konsultit Oy brought the corporation additional know-how in traffic and environmental matters. The business merged with the parent company in 2004.
Sito-rakennuttajat Oy was founded in 2004 to supplement our know-how in infrastructure, environmental and telecommunications construction.
Sito's first regional office, Sito Kuopio Oy, was founded in 2003 to serve our traffic sector clients in eastern Finland. Sito Tampere Oy started in early 2006 and is home to solid expertise in traffic, artery and maintenance planning.
Architects Arkkitehtitoimisto Mikko Heikkilä Oy became a Sito company on 1 June 2008. This acquisition brought us solid know-how in urban planning and architecture.

Sito's newist regional office, Sito Oulu Oy, was founded in begining 2010 to serve our clients in northern Finland.
