Head of Department
Tommi Nurmi

In Tommi Nurmi’s job, a wide and varied knowledge is a must, from structural engineering to electrics and ventilation, to telecommunications and construction - even contract law. But most of all, you need good interpersonal skills.

The telecommunication department of Sito Project Management is compact in size - part of the team of seven is located in Espoo and the rest work in Turku, Lappeenranta, Vaasa and Seinäjoki.

Tommi Nurmi finished his civil engineer (UAS) studies in Kotka in 1997. For the first four years after finishing his degree, he worked as a general foreman for a building firm, where he learned a lot about working life. In 2001, he was employed by a company which provided mobile phone networks. He started as a supplier but was later responsible for project management as well. Tommi has worked at Sito since 2006.

For Tommi, solving customers' problems is the most interesting part of his job. New base stations for mobile phone networks are needed all the time.

Assignments come from customers, the operators, who need a new base station in a certain area. Sito's telecommunication services include the physical framework for base stations, working out the necessary cable routes, transfer connections and electrical installations; negotiating with land and real estate owners and authorities; acquiring the necessary permits and licenses and drawing up the final contract.

"Negotations involve meetings with boards of housing cooperatives and property management. Sometimes you need to negotiate with cityscape committees and residents’ associations. In terrain-based projects, I communicate with land owners, cityscape architects and building officials. The neighbours of the future mast or pole also have to be heard," Tommi explains.

Once the customer has accepted the plan, all parties have signed the contract and necessary construction licenses have been obtained, it is time for Tommi and his team to move on to the next project.

Originally from Hamina, Tommi is married with a one-year-old son, Valtteri.
